One-to-one therapy in person in Axminster, Devon and online

Hello, I’m Emma

I offer one-to-one talk therapy to support and guide people as they find their way through times of uncertainty, change, crisis, and trauma. I work one-to-one in my cosy private room in Axminster, Devon, and also online (I’ve written some further guidance about online counselling here).

I am an Integrative Counsellor. This simply means I am able to draw upon one, or several, models of practice best suited to an individual’s needs. This enables me to address a wide range of issues from the simple disquiet we all experience, to deep personal crisis. More specifically my counselling experience, initially gained within an NHS clinical environment, includes supporting people through bereavement and loss, and in ongoing effects of childhood trauma such as complex family relationships, being sent away to boarding school, and identity crisis.

It is important that you feel comfortable, safe and valued before deciding to commit to counselling. I appreciate that choosing someone to talk to can be a daunting experience. Engaging with a counsellor and the process of therapy, especially during times of anxiety, requires trust. If you’d like to talk to me before making an appointment, please email or text and we can arrange a ten-minute phone call so that we can “meet” and discuss your needs.

How I work

We will embark on a journey of discovery side by side.

I work effectively and efficiently. Therefore I can offer flexibility in how often we meet and for however many sessions.

Everyone experiences relationships, trauma, grief, depression, and anxiety differently, but a collaborative approach will tailor itself naturally to your individual needs. I believe that people hold the key to their own recovery and that my role in that journey is to work with you in discovering how you got here, to shine a light along your chosen path, to identify possible trip hazards, to support you if you stumble, and to recognise when you are ready to walk alone.

My work is informed by a psychodynamic approach, supporting clients in their exploration of past experiences as a means to understand their present. Together we will look at what’s given rise to the unaccustomed or uncomfortable feelings you may be experiencing.

Working with bereaved clients and those who have suffered trauma has enabled me to create a framework in helping clients find a language for their emotional experiences, bringing clarity to confusing feelings.

I have an understanding of neurological processing, which means I am able to offer a view of current behavioural patterns, shedding light on the present in order to guide the future.

On occasion there may be value in exploring the use of avoidance and resistance strategies, which can for example assist you in considering more harmonious, congruent engagements with others.

Sessions are one hour, priced at £55. I offer a limited number of concessionary spaces at £45 for trainee counsellors and those on benefits.
